Why this site uses XHTML5 and CSS3
I'm a programmer. Specifically I'm a web developer. Although the languages used to build websites do evolve (albeit very slowly) not all programmes used to access the web move as quickly.
I'm speaking, of course, about Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Every web developer HATES Microsoft Internet Explorer. Millions of hours are wasted by web designers trying to make sites work properly in Internet Explorer, and as a result the entire web suffers. We cannot use the latest technologies as people expect all sites to work in all browsers.
"There comes a time in every old browser’s life to pack up shop and, well, fuck off. This time has come and gone for IE6" – Eoghan McCabe, January 2008
22% of people use Internet Explorer 6, a revision of the browser that came out before the original Xbox. As long as this cycle continues the web's growth will be severely stunted. Every web professional knows this, every one hates wasting customers' time and money on Internet Explorer, but nobody can stop while it's still the status quo.
However, this website isn't built for a government department. Or a charity. Or a shop. It's built for a web development company. While I may not be able to make this choice for clients' sites, I can for mine.
This website uses modern technologies, if it doesn't work on your old browser please upgrade it. You'll be doing yourself, web designers and other web users a great favour.
